While there are many homeschoolers who have already started their school year, I have chosen to delay our start until after Labor Day. My son has had a great time watching the other children in town go to their brick and mortar school each day. Of course his laughter will die down when we begin classes next week.

So although we will not begin classes until next week, I have been very busy planning out my lesson plans for the school year. I like to get everything planned out and ready so that I have some sort of idea what we are doing. I also needed to turn in a detailed curriculum plan to our local school district so that I am in compliance with our state laws. Preparing this was a great blessing to me as I had a guideline ready for when I began creating my lesson plans.

I have been inputting these plans into my computer and creating our learning goals for each week. However, I still like to be relaxed and go with the flow, so these will be our general guidelines. If we need to spend more time on a subject than I have allowed in my plans, then we will do just that. But the important thing is that I have taken the time to plan and prepare our year as well as I can.

Since my son has Asperger’s Syndrome, this planning is very important for his success. He needs to have a schedule and know what to expect. This makes him feel secure and helps him to succeed. And as his mother and teacher, it is my job to help him reach his full potential.
