From the Schleich website:

Schleich designs and produces the most realistic, natural, and accurate animal and historical figurines and fantasy play worlds that are entertaining, educational and fun.

The complete line of Schleich toys offers a selection of approximately 500 figurines and accessories that provide modular, open-ended and imaginative play options with unique and innovative representations of the world around us, historical periods, and the worlds of fantasy. It includes pets, sea animals, prehistoric mammals and dinosaurs, and corresponding play worlds that recreate farm life, wild life, and forest life. Historically accurate figurines and play worlds recreate the world of knights and the American frontier, and the detailed elves and corresponding play world create a world of fantasy and imagination. Schleich also manufacturers comic figurines, such as the Smurfs.

We received 6 of the animal figurines for review.  It was a joyous occasion!  We have seen these animals available for purchase at some local merchants, but we had never purchased any before.  They were just a great diversion whenever we entered one of the farm stores.  So it was with delight that we received a small sampling for review.  We received an African Elephant, a Bald Eagle, a Haflinger Horse, a Swabian-Hall Boar, a duck, and a White Tiger Cub.

These have received hours and hours of play so far and have held up to the rough housing of a 12 year old boy.  After really getting up close and personal with these figurines, we have each developed a wish list and plan to expand our collection.  At the top of our list, we have placed a hippo, a rhinocerous, a giraffe, and a hedgehog. We love the durability of these toys and how life-like they actually are.  The figurines are reasonably priced and can be purchased at local retailers or online at the Schleich website.

If you are looking for a foreign language program that immerses you in the language, then you would be hard pressed to find a better product than the one put out by the great folks at Auralog.  Tell Me More is an immersion based language program that is fun and makes learning a foreign language doable.  It is also reasonably priced for a program such as this, making it a real winner in my book!

Now, why would you want to use an immersion based program to learn a foreign language?  Let me tell you from my own personal experience!  I speak Spanish, and actually lived in Spain while serving a church mission for 18 months.  I went through a training program in which I was taught basic Spanish skills.  However, when I arrived in Spain, I quickly discovered that the lessons I were taught did not resemble the language that was actually spoken.  I had learned South American Spanish and it was very different from what I was to experience.  I learned the bulk of my Spanish by being immersed in the culture.  I had to learn it quickly so that I could purchase basic food supplies and other things I needed.  I also needed to be able to share the gospel with the people in Spain, which was my entire point in being there in the first place.  Needless to say, I learned my Spanish rapidly out of necessity.

While not everyone will need to learn a foreign language as rapidly as I needed to, I still think that the immersion process is the superior method to learn a new language.  When I found out we were going to be reviewing this product, I was excited.  I had great visions of speaking Spanish with my son.  It would be fun and a great way to brush up on my Spanish.

However, while I really thought that he would be happy to learn Spanish, I quickly discovered that he wasn’t as keen to learn Spanish as I was for him to learn it.  He wanted to learn Italian.  When I asked him why he wanted to learn Italian, this is the response I got, that could only be achieved through the logic of an 11 year old boy:  “Well, I like Italian food, so I’m pretty sure I will like the language.”

Well, I couldn’t really argue with that, so we ordered Italian.  Then we proceeded to wait for our course to arrive.  He was so excited about it, that he literally asked me if it was here yet on a daily basis for weeks.  The version that we tested out is so new and there was a delay in the initial shipping from the manufacturer.  Not fun when you have a child so anxious to learn!  When it finally arrived, I’m not sure who did the biggest happy dance…me or the boy-child.

I set the program up on his computer and instructed him to take the initial test that assesses your level of knowledge of the language so that you can start where you need to.  I already knew that he would need to start at the beginning, but I wanted him to have that experience.  He eagerly put on his headphones with microphone that was included in his box and clicked the start button.  The look on his face in just moments was priceless. After a couple of minutes he was brave enough to ask, “Are you sure they didn’t send us Russian?  I can’t understand any of this!”  I laughed and assured him it was indeed, Italian.

After his initial testing, we chose to activate the first 5 levels of the program.  There are 10 learning levels available to choose from, and you are allowed 5 of the levels with your purchase.  This enables you to start learning from wherever your level currently is in the language and then progress up 5 different levels from there.

Once you have activated your product, you are able to choose from 3 different learning modes:

  • Free to Roam-enables you to select activities at will
  • Guided Mode-a personalized lesson plan based on objectives and time constraints that you input
  • Dynamic Mode-the computer determines your lesson plans based upon your progress

The actual lessons rotate between reading, writing and speaking the language.  There are also lots of fun activities that enrich the learning process.  My son says that one of his favorite activities are the crossword puzzles.

Now I know you are probably thinking that he will speak Italian, and I will speak Spanish.  How will that help anyone?  Well, the great thing about the Tell Me More program is that each member of the family can create an individual account.  We get to all learn Italian at our own individual paces and then we can practice together.  So not only will my son benefit from this program, I get to learn as well, and even Dad can get in on the action!

This particular version of Tell Me More will be released to the general public in mid April.  It will retail for $319.99.  (That is MUCH less than other immersion programs on the market!) Watch the website for the official launch!  You won’t want to miss out on this great product!

While we want to someday tour Italy together as a family, we realize that it just may not be possible for a while.  So we have grand plans of learning our Italian and then when we are all comfortable, we will visit our favorite Italian restaurant, where we will speak Italian throughout the entire meal.  I think that is a worthy goal, don’t you?

We love lapbooks in our home, so when we received the New Testament Activity Pak by Amy Pak of Homeschool in the Woods, we were thrilled!  I was already familiar with Amy’s great products and we use her Timeline Figures from the History Through the Ages Collection in our studies already.  We knew that the quality was fantastic, so we were eager to dive into the New Testament Activity Pak. We were not disappointed in the least!  It is absolutely WONDERFUL!

Now, we have covered many of the stories from the New Testament in our home already.  But since the lapbook isn’t set into organized lessons, this worked very well for us as a great review and discussion opportunity.  However, it would be fairly easy to incorporate the activities into a focused unit study of the New Testament, as there are scripural references listed.

One of the things that I really liked about the New Testament Activity Pak is that it brought to life many of the Bible stories that we have discussed in our home.  I loved how my son was able to begin making connections from what we have discussed to what he was putting together in the lapbook. One of the funniest connections was when he was working with the original 12 Apostles.

He was working on the booklet for Judas Iscariot and commented, “Hey mom!  Did you know that Judas committed suicide by hanging himself?”

“Yes, I did.”

“Well, why did he hang himself?  Didn’t they have any guns?”

“Um…no they didn’t at that time.”

“Oh, well…I guess that hanging yourself would be easier than throwing a lot of rocks at yourself so you could be stoned to death.”

He made another connection this past week during a Bible lesson.  We were discussing the various books of the Bible and I commented that the books Romans through 2nd Thessalonians were known as the Letters by Paul to churches and that 1st Timothy through Philemon were the Letters by Paul to others.  He thought for  brief moment and then said, “Oh!  Like all of those postcards from Paul in the Lapbook we did!”

Another fun connection was when we were making the Armor of God poster project.  We had just spent a week discussing this very topic in our home during a literature study and then this topic was discussed with the youth of our church.  He was excited because he knew the answers and what each piece of armor represented in the scriptures.  I love it when things work out so seamlessly and without prior knowledge that it would all go together!  The Lord really knows what He is doing!

We are still working on the newspaper project, “The New Testament News!” and I am anticipating even more connections to be made through that project.  It is a fun one where he gets to act as a reporter and cover the action that surrounded Jesus and His miracles.  He also gets to draw in the ads for the paper.  Definitely a fun project!

So here is the rundown of what you get in the New Testament Activity Pak for $18.95 for the downloadable product or $19.95 for the product on CD:

The lapbook contains 15 different projects that will promote Biblical knowledge.  These projects and topics include:

  • Lineage from David to Jesus
  • Birth of Jesus
  • Miracles of Jesus
  • The Beatitudes
  • Fruit of the Spirit
  • The Parables of Jesus
  • The Last Supper
  • The Crucifixion
  • The Resurrection
  • The Ascension
  • Pentecost
  • Prophecies Fulfilled
  • The Twelve Disciples
  • Paul’s Missionary Journeys
  • Postcards from Paul

Then you get the 2 BONUS projects which include the Armor of God Poster and “The New Testament Times!” newspaper project.

These projects are truly wonderful!  In fact, when my mom saw the completed lapbook, she was blown away!  She hasn’t always been the most supportive of our homeschool adventure.  However, when she saw this project, she said, “Oh wow!  What a great treasure and keepsake this is!  You could even borrow this from him to use for Sunday School lessons!”

A “Keepsake” is definitely the best way to describe this study!  Amy Pak from Homeschool in the Woods has once again delivered a winning product!
